+ Is Nick a Licensed Psychotherapist?

No, Nick does not maintain licensure as a psychotherapist. However, he holds a doctorate in Psychology, is thoroughly trained in several therapeutic modalities, has worked intimately with clients for many years, adheres to on-going clinical supervision and carries professional liability insurance. Amongst other limitations, licensure would require Nick to clinically diagnose his clients and he would be legally-bound to report on certain aspects of the therapist-client relationship. Nick feels strongly that transformative education is the best form of therapy he can offer, and that avoiding licensure allows for the most flexible and adaptive environment for your personal growth and self-discovery while maintaining your privacy and integrity.

+ Does Nick Take Insurance?

No, Nick does not accept insurance. In order to accept insurance, Nick would have to demonstrate to insurance companies that his clients are “sick.” If your concern about financial hardship is preventing you from booking a session, in most cases Nick can help you create a payment plan and will provide financial assistance when possible.

+ What is Transformative Education?

Transformative education is an approach to personal and organizational health & wellness that empowers clients to make positive changes in their life from the inside out. Strongly rooted in Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology—which consider the whole person and aim to draw out one’s psychospiritual potential—transformative education combines non-directive, therapeutic approaches with time-tested, mind/body practices such as meditative movement, breathwork, and deep relaxation. Whereas traditional psychotherapy may be strictly “mental” and yoga may be primarily “physical,” transformative education teaches you how to heal yourself by identifying your multidimensional (i.e., both mental & physical) blockages, shifting the energy, emotions and beliefs that support them, and evolving into a more integrated, healthier you.

+ What is Yoga Psychology?

Yoga Psychology is a multidimensional framework for understanding the self in relation to the world. According to various yogic traditions, each one of us exists not only as an individual but also as an integral and inseparable part of the entire universe, like a droplet of water in an infinite ocean. As in Buddhism, Yoga Psychology suggests that the source of our suffering—be it physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.—lies in our fundamental misbelief that we are separate from all things. While it isn’t difficult to grasp this notion of interconnectedness at an intellectual level, these beliefs are deeply rooted in our subconscious and are difficult to remedy. Yoga and, in particular, meditation offers us a way out by experientially uprooting the causes of suffering through any number of therapeutic methods. Unfortunately, modern yoga tends to operate almost exclusively at the physical level and rarely does it facilitate lasting psychological changes. By embracing a multimodal approach to yoga therapy that bridges the gap between Eastern philosophy and Western medicine, we are able to explore and understand the self with greater depth and precision. As such, Yoga Psychology encourages insight, authenticity, resiliency and transformation leading toward genuine happiness, vibrant health and enduring peace.

+ What is Expressive Therapy?

Expressive Therapy is an approach to psychospiritual healing that emphasizes the cleansing of affective energies through awareness-and-emotive-based exercises. Expressive Therapy can take the form of writing, art-making, music & chanting, movement, laughter, crying or simply being with emotionally-charged feelings that we tend to neglect and, subsequently, contribute to disease. Expressive Therapy allows us to cultivate deep empathy and therapeutic presence with ourselves and others, helps us to grieve, release stress, and naturally generates overwhelming joy, compassion, and wellbeing.

+ What is Yoga Sleep Therapy®?

Yoga Sleep Therapy® is a multifaceted practice designed to bring relief to the millions of people suffering from insomnia, sleep deprivation, migraine, chronic pain and stress. YST offers a specialized combination of gentle postures, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to help you unwind, fall asleep, and sleep soundly through the night. At its core is Yoga Nidra, a profound approach to meditation that leads to continual psychological, physical and spiritual growth and supports being at ease in every life circumstance. Additionally, YST brings awareness to the behavioral patterns that prevent us from accessing long-lasting peace, helps us to establish positive routines to quiet the mind, relieve the body, and to uncover and flush out the roots of suffering. This groundbreaking, integrative approach to healing can be used in personal practice and yoga classes as well as in clinical and medical settings.

+ What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra, or “sleep yoga,” is a deep, guided relaxation practice that helps to release anxiety and stress while restoring the self to a level of optimal attunement with one’s surroundings. Evidence-based research has shown the effectiveness of Yoga Nidra in treating hypertension, depression, sleep disorders and chemical dependency, as well as aiding in pain management and general wellbeing. Yoga Nidra’s far-reaching benefits have also been successfully employed in the treatment of veterans suffering from PTSD, as a natural medicine for cancer patients, and have been utilized by schools in helping children to express their emotions and build a healthy sense of self. Subsequently, Yoga Nidra is at the cutting-edge of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) yet remains accessible to a complete beginner. As one advances in the practice of Yoga Nidra, the experience may be self-guided and may also become a framework through which to view one’s psychospiritual progression toward self-realization. Consequently, Yoga Nidra is often called the “Heart of Yoga.”

+ What is Dream Yoga?

Dream Yoga is both a psychotherapeutic approach to dreamwork and an ancient technology for self-realization. Dream Yoga begins with the practice of dream journaling and identifying emotionally-charged themes to work with in meditation. As emotional energy is released and integrated within the self, one’s dreams tend to become more vivid and, ultimately, lucid—one becomes aware that he or she is dreaming during the dream itself. The expanded consciousness of Dream Yoga (essentially, meditation within the dream state) offers us an opportunity for tremendous healing at a profoundly deep level, including the possibility of life-altering mystical experience, overcoming existential fear, receiving cathartic insight into one’s unique purpose, and basking in a residual wellbeing that permeates out into all aspects of our life.
